Zanzibar
Zanzibar gives you two very different experiences, the history and energy of Stone Town, and the slower rhythm of the coast. Here's why combining them can make for a much better first trip.
Zanzibar can feel like two completely different trips.
There's Stone Town, historic, atmospheric, full of narrow streets, local markets, Swahili architecture, spice filled shops, and stories shaped by centuries of trade.
Then there's the coast, white sand, turquoise water, long lunches, sunset cruises, and the slower pace most people imagine when they picture Zanzibar.
For a first trip, we usually recommend experiencing both.
Stone Town gives you the context for Zanzibar before you disappear into beach mode.
Spend a night or two exploring the old city, discovering its markets and architecture, trying local food, and taking in the atmosphere. A spice farm visit is also an easy way to experience another side of the island beyond the coastline.
It's a very different experience from staying at a beach resort, and that's exactly why we think it belongs in the itinerary.
After Stone Town, head towards the beach.
This is where the pace changes. Days can be as simple as breakfast by the water, swimming, exploring the coastline, enjoying a sunset dhow cruise, or doing absolutely nothing for a few hours.
The right beach area depends on the kind of trip you want.
Nungwi and Kendwa are popular for beautiful beaches, swimming, sunsets, and a livelier atmosphere.
Paje has a more laid back feel and is particularly popular with travellers interested in water activities and a younger, more relaxed beach scene.
There isn't one best part of Zanzibar, it depends on what you want your days to look like.
Zanzibar has plenty to fill an itinerary: spice farms, Stone Town, dhow cruises, snorkelling, diving, Prison Island, local restaurants, beach days, and more.
But you don't need to turn every day into an excursion.
One of the best things about Zanzibar is having enough time to slow down.
For a first visit, we might structure the trip around one to two nights in Stone Town followed by four to five nights on the coast, depending on your overall schedule and what you want from the trip.
That gives you a taste of the island's history and culture without sacrificing the beach time you probably came for.
Stone Town → Beaches → Home
The key is choosing the right area, allowing enough time in each place, and balancing experiences with downtime.
That's where the details matter, from choosing the right hotel and beach location to arranging the transfers between stays and deciding which experiences are actually worth adding.
When we design a Zanzibar trip, we look beyond simply finding a hotel.
We consider how you want the trip to feel, which part of the island suits you, how much time to spend in each area, what experiences are worth including, and how everything connects from the moment you arrive.
The result is a trip that feels easy, with enough planned to make it memorable, and enough space to simply enjoy being there.
Our take: If this is your first Zanzibar trip, don't choose between Stone Town and the beach. Give yourself a little of both.
